Commemoration of the Fourth UN International Day to Protect Education from Attack

11 September, 2023

On 11 September 2023, the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations in Geneva, Education Above All (EAA), and the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) are co-organising the commemoration of the fourth UN International Day to Protect Education from Attack. The event will be co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Argentina, Nigeria, Norway, and Spain to the United Nations in Geneva, the Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies (EiE Hub), and Save the Children.

9 September was proclaimed the International Day to Protect Education from Attack by a unanimous resolution of the UN General Assembly, initially presented by the State of Qatar and co-sponsored by 62 Member States, and adopted on 28 May 2020 during its 74th session. This year, we celebrate the fourth commemoration of this landmark resolution, which aims to catalyze actions to protect students, educators, and educational institutions.

The event will take place in person, at 12 noon in Room XXV of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, while some speakers may speak remotely or via video message. The event will be live-streamed for a wider online audience.

Following the event, at 13:00, guests will be invited to a photo exhibition showcasing the impact of attacks on education. The exhibition will be on display at the exhibition gallery through September 2023, to celebrate the right to education as an enabling right that guarantees all others, and highlight the importance of ensuring that education itself is protected.

The exhibition will be followed by a reception hosted by the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar in Geneva and Education Above All.
