Protecting Education in Armed Conflict: Access and Accountability

14 March, 2024

A side event to the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, Protecting Education in Armed Conflict: Access and Accountability, will be held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 14 March 2024. This in-person event is co-organised by the Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies (EiE Hub) and Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict, and co-sponsored by Colombia, the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA), the Group of Friends on Children and Armed Conflicts, Malta, and Switzerland.

For registration information, please see below.

The right of every child to an education is enshrined in Article 28 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Sustainable Development Goal 4 further reiterates the international community’s commitment to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all. Yet, for the 449 million children living in conflict zones globally, realizing this right remains a challenge.

This side event aims to identify challenges related to the protection and provision of education in conflict settings, discuss measures that should be taken by parties to armed conflict, by both States or non-State actors, to be in line with their international obligations, share practical measures and good practices that can be replicated across the globe to better protect and provide education in conflict affected areas, and discuss opportunities for leveraging human rights mechanisms to prioritise education in conflict settings (based on the recommendations highlighted in the report of the Workshop on Education in Emergencies in the UN Human Rights Mechanisms organized in June 2023 by the EiE Hub)
