The Shrinking Space for Education in the Humanitarian Response: 2026 EiE Financing and Prioritization Analysis

The diminishing pool of humanitarian funding has resulted in deep cuts to education while the needs in countries in crisis are escalating. Despite its lifesaving role for children in emergencies, current humanitarian financing sidelines education, denying millions of girls and boys access to protection, the right to learn, and the opportunity to build a future beyond crisis. Globally, only around one-third of total funding requirements were met in 2025. In some crises, the gap was far more severe: more than 90% of requirements were left unfunded in Cameroon, more than 80% in Mali, and more than 70% in Burkina Faso and Bangladesh.
