Health and education are fundamentally interconnected: education improves health outcomes, while good health supports learning, retention, and lifelong productivity. Schools are critical platforms for delivering health services, with most countries integrating health into curricula and many implementing vaccination programmes. Yet millions of children in crisis-affected settings, as well as other countries in the world, are being denied both education and essential health services when they need them most. Conflict, climate change, and health emergencies expose children to violence, disease, and psychosocial stress, while disrupting schooling and access to care. Today, 234 million crisis-affected children need educational support, including 85 million who are entirely out of school. Without urgent action, progress in child survival and development – and the achievement of SDG3 and SDG4 -will be at risk.
This event will highlight how integrated health and education approaches can address urgent needs in fragile and development contexts, including through schools as delivery platforms for health, nutrition, violence prevention, and psychosocial services. It will also showcase country examples and call for stronger collaboration, financing, and commitments across sectors.
The event is co-sponsored by Sweden, UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO, and the EiE Hub.
