Opinion: “Education is being squeezed out of humanitarian funding – just when children need it most”

As aid budgets shrink, education must not be treated as expendable just because its life-saving impact is less immediately visible, writes Petra Heusser, Executive Director of the Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies in an opinion piece for Geneva Solutions.

The piece comes ahead of a major convening in Geneva on 5 November 2026 to mobilise funding for Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the global fund for education in crises within the United Nations. ECW is seeking to raise US$600 million to provide 10 million crisis-affected children with quality education over the next four years.
